La Tor de Montclar - Skiing at Masella: Night Skiing in the Catalan Pyrenees

Skiing at Masella: Night Skiing in the Catalan Pyrenees

Masella stands out among Catalan Pyrenees ski resorts for its north-facing orientation, which preserves snow quality throughout the season, and for offering the only night skiing experience in Catalonia. Located approximately one hour from La Tor de Montclar, this family-friendly resort features 74 pistes between 1,600 and 2,535 metres elevation. Through the Alp 2500 lift pass, Masella connects with neighbouring La Molina to create the largest ski area in Catalonia.

The Resort and Its Slopes

Masella's north-facing exposure is its greatest natural advantage. While south-facing resorts bake in afternoon sun, Masella's slopes remain shaded and cold, preserving powder snow and maintaining excellent conditions well into spring. The resort's 74 marked pistes wind through dense forests of black pine, creating an atmospheric alpine setting distinct from the more open terrain at neighbouring resorts.

The La Tosa sector offers the resort's most challenging terrain, with steep blacks and demanding reds that test advanced skiers. The Niu de l'Àguila (Eagle's Nest) area provides gentler blues and greens perfect for families, beginners, and those seeking relaxed cruising. Tree-lined runs protect skiers from wind on stormy days, and the forest environment creates natural reference points useful in flat light conditions.

Night Skiing: A Unique Experience

Masella holds the distinction of being Catalonia's only resort offering night skiing. On selected evenings throughout the winter season, thirteen pistes are illuminated by powerful floodlights, allowing skiing to continue from 6:00 PM until 8:30 PM. The experience of carving turns under the stars, with the lights of the Cerdanya valley twinkling below and the dark silhouettes of peaks rising all around, creates an unforgettable mountain memory.

Night skiing sessions are especially popular with groups staying in the area, as they allow a second ski session after returning to accommodation for a break and an early dinner. The illuminated slopes include a mix of blue and red runs, suitable for confident intermediate skiers. Special night skiing lift passes are available at reduced rates, or you can upgrade a day pass to include the evening session.

Alp 2500: Combined Access to La Molina

The Alp 2500 lift pass is a joint ticket covering both Masella and La Molina resorts. A chairlift connection at the top of both ski areas allows you to ski between the two without descending to valley level. Combined, Alp 2500 offers over 145 kilometres of pistes—the largest ski area in the Catalan Pyrenees and one of the biggest in all of Spain.

This connectivity means you can sample Masella's tree-lined north-facing slopes in the morning, cross over to La Molina for lunch and afternoon skiing on sunnier terrain, then return to Masella for night skiing in the evening. The pass provides excellent value for multi-day ski trips, and the variety of terrain across both mountains keeps the skiing interesting throughout your stay.

Practical Information for Visiting

From La Tor de Montclar, reach Masella via the C-16 north, through the Cadi Tunnel, then follow signs to Alp and Masella village. The journey covers approximately 65 kilometres and takes about one hour in normal conditions. The resort has ample parking (free and paid zones), equipment rental shops, ski school with English-speaking instructors, and several on-mountain restaurants.

Masella's base area includes a modern resort village with accommodation, shops, and après-ski facilities. However, many visitors stay in nearby towns like Alp, Puigcerdà, or even in Berguedà (including La Tor de Montclar), driving up each day. As with all Pyrenean skiing, winter tyres or snow chains are mandatory and frequently checked by police during snowfall.
