Cardona is one of Catalonia's most impressive medieval towns, dominated by its hilltop castle and famous for the extraordinary Salt Mountain, a geological wonder. Located about 1 hour from La Tor de Montclar, Cardona offers a unique combination of history, geology and gastronomy for a memorable full-day excursion.
The Salt Mountain: a geological marvel
Cardona's Salt Mountain is one of the most important salt deposits in Europe, with a diapir (salt dome) that rises to the surface and has been mined since Roman times. The mountain itself is a striking pink-grey mass of almost pure halite, visible from kilometres away.
You can visit the Cultural Park of the Salt Mountain, which includes:
- Guided tour of the Nieves Mine: descend into underground galleries to see stalactites and formations of crystallised salt
- Interpretation centre: explains the geology and 2,000-year mining history
- Outdoor viewpoints: walk around the base of the salt dome for spectacular views
Tours last 1.5 hours and cost 12 EUR for adults, 8 EUR for children. Book in advance, especially on weekends.
Cardona Castle and the Parador
Perched on a hill overlooking the town, Cardona Castle is a masterpiece of medieval military architecture. Founded in the 9th century, it was one of the most powerful fortresses in Catalonia, seat of the Dukes of Cardona.
The complex includes:
- The Minyona Tower: a 15-metre tall cylindrical keep from the 11th century
- The Collegiate Church of Sant Vicenc: a Romanesque church with a magnificent crypt and cloister
- The castle walls: walk along the ramparts for panoramic views over the Cardener valley and the Salt Mountain
Part of the castle is now a Parador de Turismo (state-run luxury hotel). You can visit the castle and church for 5 EUR, or simply enjoy a coffee or lunch at the Parador's restaurant with spectacular views.
Morning itinerary: castle and old town
Arrive in Cardona mid-morning and drive up to the castle first. Spend 1-2 hours exploring the fortifications, the church and the panoramic viewpoints. If the weather is good, the views extend to the Pyrenees.
Then descend to the old town of Cardona. Highlights include:
- Placa de la Fira: the main square with arcades and medieval houses
- Gothic Quarter: narrow streets and stone portals
- Market Hall: modernist building, now a cultural centre
This is the perfect time to visit local shops selling salt products: bath salts, salt lamps and gourmet fleur de sel.
Lunch and afternoon: Salt Mountain tour
Have lunch in one of Cardona's traditional restaurants. Try Bages cuisine: escudella (Catalan stew), grilled meats, mushrooms in season. Many menus feature dishes cooked with Cardona salt. Expect to pay 15-25 EUR for a set menu.
In the afternoon, drive or walk to the Salt Mountain Cultural Park (about 2 km from the town centre). Join a guided tour of the Nieves Mine, where you'll descend into the salt galleries and learn about mining techniques from Roman times to the 20th century. The underground temperature is constant at 15°C, so bring a light jacket.
After the tour, walk around the exterior paths to see the salt dome close up and take photographs of this extraordinary geological formation.
