The Industrial Colonies of the Llobregat are a unique heritage trail following the river through former textile villages built during Catalonia's industrial revolution. Located 30 minutes from La Tor de Montclar, these remarkably preserved colonies offer a fascinating glimpse into 19th-century industrial life, complete with factory buildings, workers' housing and museums.
What were the industrial colonies?
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Catalan industrialists built textile factories along the rivers of the interior, harnessing water power for machinery. They created complete self-contained villages around the factories, including:
- The factory: multi-storey buildings housing spinning and weaving machines
- Workers' housing: rows of identical houses for employees
- Owner's mansion: lavish residence for the industrialist family
- Church: often Neo-Gothic or Modernist architecture
- School, shop, casino: social facilities for the captive workforce
These colonies were paternalistic communities where the owner controlled all aspects of workers' lives. Today, many are abandoned or converted to other uses, creating an atmospheric landscape of industrial archaeology.
