Montserrat is Catalonia's most iconic mountain, with jagged peaks rising dramatically above the plains and a Benedictine monastery perched at 720 metres. Home to the Black Madonna, one of Catalonia's most venerated religious images, Montserrat is both a spiritual centre and natural wonder. Located 2 hours from La Tor de Montclar, it makes a spectacular full-day excursion combining culture, spirituality and mountain hiking.
The monastery and the Black Madonna
The Monastery of Montserrat has been a place of pilgrimage for over 1,000 years, home to a community of around 80 Benedictine monks. The present buildings date mainly from the 19th century (earlier structures were destroyed by Napoleon's troops), built in a severe stone style that blends with the mountain.
The main attraction is La Moreneta (the Black Madonna), a 12th-century wooden statue of the Virgin Mary with dark patina, believed by tradition to have been carved by Saint Luke and hidden in a cave during the Moorish invasion. The statue is Catalonia's patron saint.
To venerate the Black Madonna, join the queue (often 30-60 minutes wait) to enter the camarín (shrine room) behind the main altar. You can touch the orb held by the Madonna - a moment of great spiritual significance for pilgrims. The basilica itself is free to enter.
The monastery also houses the famous Escolania de Montserrat, one of Europe's oldest boys' choirs (founded 13th century). They sing daily at 1pm during term time (not July-August) - a beautiful experience.
The Museum: art treasures
The Museu de Montserrat contains a surprising world-class art collection, including works by:
- Old Masters: Caravaggio, El Greco
- Impressionists: Monet, Degas, Pissarro
- Catalan modernists: Picasso, Dalí, Miró
- Archaeological collection: Mesopotamian, Egyptian and Holy Land artefacts
Entry is 7 EUR. Allow 1-1.5 hours. The quality of the collection is extraordinary for a monastery museum.
Getting there: rack railway or cable car
Reaching Montserrat is an experience in itself. From the base at Monistrol de Montserrat, you have two options:
1. Cremallera (rack railway):
- Vintage cogwheel train climbing the mountain
- 20-minute journey with spectacular views
- Runs every hour, more frequently in peak season
- Cost: 7 EUR one-way, 11 EUR return
2. Aeri de Montserrat (cable car):
- Dramatic aerial cable car ascending sheer cliffs
- 5-minute journey - thrilling but faster
- Cost: 9 EUR one-way, 13 EUR return
Both options depart from different base stations. Most visitors prefer the rack railway for the full experience. Combined tickets including parking and transport are available for 20 EUR.
Mountain hikes and funiculars
Montserrat offers spectacular hiking with trails to peaks and hermitages. Two funiculars provide access to higher elevations:
1. Funicular de Sant Joan:
- Ascends to 1,000m, starting point for hikes
- Sant Joan hermitage: 20-minute walk from top station, stunning views
- Sant Jeroni peak: 1-hour hike to Montserrat's highest point (1,236m), with 360-degree panoramas
- Cost: 7 EUR one-way, 10 EUR return
2. Funicular de Santa Cova:
- Descends to the cave where legend says the Black Madonna was found
- 15-minute walk to the cave along a path with modernist sculptures
- Cost: 4 EUR one-way, 6 EUR return
For a full mountain experience, take Sant Joan funicular up, hike to the summit of Sant Jeroni, and descend via trails back to the monastery (allow 3-4 hours, moderate difficulty).
Day itinerary: spirituality and nature
Morning: Depart La Tor de Montclar early (8am) to arrive at Monistrol around 10am. Take the rack railway up to the monastery (book tickets online to avoid queues).
Visit the basilica and join the queue for the Black Madonna. If it's 1pm on a weekday (term time), stay for the boys' choir performance - sublime.

Afternoon: Choose your adventure:
- Option A (cultural): Visit the museum, explore the monastery complex, walk to nearby viewpoints
