Wines of DO Pla de Bages: Catalan Indigenous Varieties

DO Pla de Bages, officially recognized in 1995, covers approximately 500 hectares (1,235 acres) of vineyards at altitudes between 200-600 meters (650-2,000 feet). The continental climate—hot summers (30-35°C / 86-95°F), cold winters (down to -5°C / 23°F)—and calcareous soils give these wines marked character distinct from coastal Catalan regions.

The star variety is picapoll blanc (also called picapoll blanco or pansa blanca), an indigenous white grape nearly extinct by the 1980s but now rescued and celebrated. It produces fresh, aromatic wines with elegant acidity, floral notes (white flowers, chamomile), and citrus flavors. Think of it as somewhere between Albariño and unoaked Chardonnay.

Mandó (also spelled mando) is the local red variety, also rescued from near-extinction. It yields wines with red fruit character (strawberry, raspberry), soft tannins, and medium body. Sumoll, grenache noir, tempranillo (called ull de llebre in Catalan), and macabeu round out the plantings.
