La Tor de Montclar - Cercs: mining heritage and the Baells reservoir

Cercs: mining heritage and the Baells reservoir

Cercs is a municipality in the heart of Berguedà profoundly marked by its mining history. For more than a century, coal mines were the economic engine of the area, creating workers' colonies and a unique industrial heritage that tells the story of Catalonia's Industrial Revolution in the mountains. Today, the Mining Museum is one of the most engaging cultural attractions in the comarca, offering visitors the extraordinary experience of descending into a real coal mine. The nearby Baells reservoir adds natural beauty to the industrial heritage. Located just 15 minutes from La Tor de Montclar, Cercs is one of the closest and most fascinating excursion points from our house.

The Mining Museum: descending into the earth's depths

The Museu de les Mines de Cercs (Cercs Mining Museum) is an interactive museum that allows visitors to experience what it was like to work in a real coal mine. A miner's train takes you into the galleries where you can see the conditions miners faced daily, with reconstructed scenes bringing the underground world vividly to life.

The permanent exhibition explains the geology of coal formation over millions of years, the history of mining in Berguedà from the 19th century through the late 20th century, and the social conditions of miners and their families who lived in isolated company-owned colonies. It's an educational and emotionally powerful experience suitable for all ages, though young children may find the darkness and confined spaces challenging. The museum brilliantly conveys both the technical ingenuity and the human cost of the coal mining industry.

Sant Corneli: the mining colony

Sant Corneli is the former mining colony linked to the Cercs mines. Like the textile colonies along the Llobregat, Sant Corneli was a complete self-contained community owned by the mining company: workers' housing, school, church, company store (economat) and communal spaces all built to serve and control the workforce.

Today, Sant Corneli preserves its original urban structure and forms part of the museum complex. Walking through its streets is like travelling back to the industrial past of Berguedà. The architecture of social control is evident: the company's panoptic vision of workers' lives expressed in stone and mortar. This model of total company towns was common across industrial Catalonia and represents a crucial chapter in the region's social history.

The Baells reservoir

The municipality of Cercs includes part of the embassament de la Baells (Baells reservoir), the largest artificial lake in Berguedà. With a capacity of 115 cubic hectometres, the reservoir has become a popular leisure space for fishing (with license), hiking and picnicking. The views from the dam are spectacular, with the distinctive profile of the Pedraforca mountain rising in the background.

The perimeter path around the reservoir offers an easy family-friendly route with picnic areas and viewpoints along the way. The turquoise waters reflecting the surrounding pine-covered mountains create a striking landscape that changes with the seasons and light. In autumn, the reservoir shores are particularly beautiful as the forest foliage turns gold and copper.

Nature and surrounding area

Cercs extends between the Llobregat valley and the Pre-Pyrenean ranges. Forests of Scots pine and oak dominate the landscape, with pastures in the higher areas. The municipality includes dispersed hamlets such as Sant Salvador de la Vedella with its Romanesque church, adding historical depth to the area.

The proximity to Berga (10 minutes) and Bagà (15 minutes) makes Cercs a strategically located and well-connected point within the comarca. The combination of industrial heritage, natural beauty and accessibility makes it an excellent destination for families and anyone interested in understanding how industrialisation transformed these mountain valleys.
