Mountain Biking in Berguedà: Forest Trails and Alpine Routes

The Berguedà BTT Centre manages over 20 marked itineraries totalling more than 400 kilometres of riding. Routes are colour-coded by difficulty: green (easy, suitable for families), blue (moderate, some climbing required), red (difficult, technical sections), and black (expert only, steep and demanding). GPX files for all routes can be downloaded from the BTT Centre website.

Highlight rides include the Llobregat River valley route, a gentle blue-graded trail following the river through gorges and meadows; the climb to Rasos de Peguera, which ascends from around 1,800 metres parking elevation to peaks near 2,050 metres with panoramic Pyrenean views; and technical forest circuits through Montclar and l'Espunyola combining flowing singletrack with steep rocky sections. Many routes start directly from the doorstep of La Tor de Montclar.

Bike shops in Berga and Bagà offer mountain bike and e-bike rentals by the half-day, full day, or week. Rental bikes are typically good-quality hardtails or full-suspension models in excellent condition. E-bike rentals have become increasingly popular, allowing riders to cover more distance and climbing with less fatigue—particularly useful in mountainous terrain.

Shops also provide mechanical support, repairs, and maintenance services if your own bike needs attention. Several local companies offer guided mountain bike outings with vehicle support, transporting you and your bikes to trailheads, providing lunch, and offering expert guidance on the best trails. La Tor de Montclar has secure storage for bikes and basic tools for minor adjustments and repairs.

Forest tracks and mountain trails can be muddy and slippery in spring following snowmelt, while summer brings dry, dusty conditions. Autumn offers ideal riding with cooler temperatures, clear air, and stunning foliage colours. In summer, start rides early to avoid the intense midday heat, and always carry more water than you think necessary—high temperatures and climbing quickly deplete hydration.

Many trails are shared with hikers, so ride courteously: slow down when approaching walkers, call out a friendly greeting, and give way on narrow paths. Respect signposted trail directions and avoid creating new trails, which causes erosion and environmental damage. Local wildlife includes wild boar, deer, and birds of prey, so keep noise levels reasonable and enjoy observing the natural surroundings.

Essential equipment includes a well-maintained mountain bike, helmet, gloves, and appropriate clothing layers. Carry a basic repair kit with spare tubes, tyre levers, a multi-tool, and a pump or CO2 inflator. A first-aid kit, mobile phone, and trail map or GPS device are important safety items. Protective eyewear shields against dust, insects, and branches.

Riding skills vary by trail difficulty. Green and blue routes require basic bike handling and fitness. Red and black trails demand advanced technical skills: navigating rocky sections, steep descents, tight switchbacks, and exposure on mountain ridges.
