La Tor de Montclar - Kayaking at Pantà de la Baells Reservoir

Kayaking at Pantà de la Baells Reservoir

The Pantà de la Baells is the principal reservoir on the Llobregat river in Berguedà, surrounded by mountains and offering spectacular views of the iconic Pedraforca peak. Located just 20 minutes from La Tor de Montclar, this 365-hectare lake provides ideal conditions for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and other non-motorised water sports in a stunning natural setting. The calm, sheltered waters make it perfect for beginners and families, while the scenic shoreline rewards exploratory paddling.

Water Activities on the Reservoir

The Baells reservoir permits non-motorised water sports only, preserving a peaceful atmosphere free from jet ski and motorboat noise. Kayaking is the most popular activity, with both sit-on-top and sit-inside kayaks available for rental. Stand-up paddleboarding (SUP) has grown in popularity thanks to the generally calm water conditions, providing a full-body workout while allowing you to explore the reservoir's coves and inlets.

Local operators near the reservoir offer kayak and SUP rentals by the hour or half-day, along with brief safety instruction for beginners. Guided kayak tours lasting 2 to 3 hours take you to the most scenic corners of the reservoir, including secluded beaches, viewpoints of the Pedraforca, and areas where wildlife is frequently spotted. These guided outings include all equipment and are suitable for families with children aged 8 and up.

The Natural Setting

The Baells reservoir was created in the 1970s by damming the Llobregat river. It covers 365 hectares (roughly 900 acres) at full capacity and is surrounded by pine and oak forests that descend to the water's edge. From the surface of the lake, you enjoy a unique perspective of the Pedraforca massif, the distinctive twin-peaked mountain that is the symbol of Berguedà.

The reservoir shores host diverse wildlife. Waterfowl including mallards, coots, and grey herons are common residents, while kingfishers flash blue along the margins. Raptors such as griffon vultures, golden eagles, and buzzards soar overhead, using the thermals rising from the surrounding slopes. Lucky paddlers might spot otter tracks on muddy banks—otters have recolonised the Llobregat watershed in recent years. The forested shores provide habitat for wild boar, roe deer, and foxes.

Access and Facilities

The reservoir is accessed from the villages of Cercs and Vilada, both about 20 minutes by car from La Tor de Montclar. Several access points around the lake offer parking (free), picnic areas with tables and grills, and walking paths along sections of the shoreline. The most developed access point near Cercs has rental facilities, toilets, and a small beach area.

Water levels fluctuate seasonally depending on rainfall and water management releases. Summer and early autumn typically see the highest water levels, while late autumn and winter can expose rocky shores and mudflats. Before visiting, it's worth checking current conditions, especially after dry periods when the reservoir may be significantly drawn down. Even at low levels, there's usually enough water for enjoyable paddling, though launching points may require a short carry to reach the water.

When to Visit and What to Bring

The best period for water activities is June through September when air and water temperatures are warmest. July and August can be hot, with midday temperatures exceeding 30°C (86°F)—perfect weather for water sports. Spring (May-June) and early autumn (September-October) offer pleasant conditions with fewer visitors and comfortable temperatures, though the water remains cool.

Bring sun protection (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses), drinking water, and a dry bag for items you want to keep protected. Swimwear or quick-dry clothing is recommended. If renting, basic equipment (boat, paddle, life jacket) is provided, but you may want to bring your own if you have specific preferences. Wetsuits are available for rental during cooler months. Changing facilities are available at the main access points.
