La Tor de Montclar - La Seu d'Urgell: Romanesque Cathedral and Olympic Park

La Seu d'Urgell: Romanesque Cathedral and Olympic Park

La Seu d'Urgell is the historic capital of the Alt Urgell region, nestled in the Pyrenees near the border with Andorra. Famous for its stunning Romanesque cathedral, Olympic water sports facilities and traditional cheese production, it makes a superb full-day excursion from La Tor de Montclar, about 1.5 hours via the Cadi tunnel.

The Cathedral: a Romanesque masterpiece

The Cathedral of Santa Maria is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in Catalonia, built in the 12th century. Its austere beauty and harmonious proportions are breathtaking:

  • The nave: supported by massive stone columns with carved capitals depicting biblical scenes
  • The cloister: one of the best-preserved Romanesque cloisters in Spain, with sculpted capitals showing monsters, foliage and daily life
  • The bell tower: a Lombard-style tower rising elegantly above the town
  • The Diocesan Museum: houses the extraordinary Beatus of Seu d'Urgell, a 10th-century illuminated manuscript

Entry to the cathedral complex is 6 EUR and includes the cloister and museum. Allow 1-1.5 hours for the visit.

Olympic Park Segre: white-water adventure

La Seu d'Urgell hosted the canoeing events for the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, and the purpose-built white-water course remains one of Europe's best. The Parc Olimpic del Segre offers:

  • White-water kayaking and rafting: courses for all levels, from beginners to Olympic athletes
  • Hydrospeed and canyoning: adrenaline activities in the rapids
  • Viewing areas: watch kayakers and rafters navigate the course
  • Adventure activities: zip-lining, climbing wall, zorbing

Even if you don't participate, it's worth visiting to see the impressive facilities and watch athletes training. Rafting sessions cost from 30-40 EUR and last about 1 hour.

Cheese shops and local gastronomy

La Seu d'Urgell is famous for artisan cheeses, especially the local cow's milk cheeses from the Pyrenees. The town has several excellent cheese shops where you can taste and buy:

  • Formatgeria Tiraval: award-winning artisan cheeses
  • Formatges Pyrene: wide selection from Alt Urgell and beyond
  • Market stalls: Saturday morning market for local produce

For lunch, try traditional Alt Urgell cuisine: trinxat (potato and cabbage), grilled lamb, river trout, wild mushrooms. Restaurants in the old town offer set menus for 15-22 EUR.
