La Tor de Montclar - Cerdanya and Puigcerda: Pyrenean plateau and cross-border adventures

Cerdanya and Puigcerda: Pyrenean plateau and cross-border adventures

La Cerdanya is a unique high-altitude valley in the Pyrenees, straddling Spain and France. The capital, Puigcerda, sits on the Spanish side, while the curious enclave of Llívia is surrounded by French territory. One hour from La Tor de Montclar, this excursion offers stunning mountain scenery, cross-border culture and excellent shopping.

Puigcerda: capital of the Cerdanya

Puigcerda is a charming Pyrenean town perched at 1,200 metres altitude, with wide streets, belle époque architecture and spectacular mountain views. Key attractions include:

  • The Lake: an artificial pond created in 1260, now a park with swan pedalos, walking paths and picnic areas
  • Santa Maria bell tower: the only remaining part of a church destroyed in the Civil War; climb to the top for panoramic views
  • Carrer Major: the lively main street with shops, cafés and restaurants
  • The market: Sunday morning market selling local produce, cheeses and crafts

Puigcerda is also a shopping destination, with boutiques, sports equipment stores (for skiing and hiking) and gourmet food shops.

Llívia: the Spanish island in France

Llívia is a geographical curiosity: a Spanish town completely surrounded by French territory, 6 km from Puigcerda. It became an enclave in 1659 when the Treaty of the Pyrenees transferred villages to France, but Llívia, as a "town" rather than a "village", remained Spanish.

Highlights of Llívia include:

  • The oldest pharmacy in Europe: the Esteve Pharmacy dates from 1415 and is now a fascinating museum displaying antique medicines and equipment
  • The castle: 15th-century fortifications on a hilltop above the town
  • Romanesque church of Nostra Senyora dels Angels: 12th-century church with fine carvings
  • Cross-border walks: trails between Llívia and France, marked with yellow Catalan and blue French signs

To reach Llívia from Puigcerda, drive through French territory for 6 km (no passport control, but you'll see French road signs). It's a surreal experience.

Cross-border shopping and gastronomy

The Cerdanya region offers excellent cross-border shopping:

  • French supermarkets: Carrefour and Intermarché in Bourg-Madame (French side) for wines, cheeses and foie gras
  • Spanish shops: Puigcerda and Llívia for jamon, chorizo and Catalan specialities
  • Andorran duty-free: 30 km away for electronics, perfumes and tobacco

For food, try Cerdanya cuisine: trinxat (potato and cabbage), grilled lamb, truffles (winter), wild mushrooms (autumn). Both Spanish and French restaurants offer excellent mountain cooking. Expect to pay 18-25 EUR for a set menu.

Day itinerary: two countries, one valley

Morning: Drive from La Tor de Montclar via the Cadi tunnel (toll 12 EUR return) to Puigcerda, arriving around 10:30am. Stroll around the lake, climb the Santa Maria tower for views, and explore the shops on Carrer Major.

Midday: Drive through France to Llívia (bring ID/passport just in case). Visit the historic pharmacy museum (entry 3 EUR) and walk around the medieval centre.

Lunch: Choose between a French restaurant in nearby Bourg-Madame or return to Puigcerda for Catalan cuisine.

Afternoon: If interested in shopping, visit French supermarkets in Bourg-Madame. Alternatively, explore the valley: drive to Bellver de Cerdanya (10 km) for its medieval bridge, or towards ski resorts like Masella for mountain views.
