Casserres: plateau with views and medieval heritage

Casserres is a municipality of lower Berguedà situated on an elevated plateau that dominates the Llobregat valley. With around 1,500 inhabitants, it preserves a medieval old quarter with narrow streets, a Romanesque church and impressive panoramic views that extend from the Pedraforca to Montserrat on clear days. The strategic elevated position that made Casserres an important medieval watchtower now provides modern visitors with spectacular vistas across the entire comarca. From La Tor de Montclar, it is 15 minutes by car through rolling countryside that gradually opens to reveal expansive views.

The old quarter on the plateau

The nucleus of Casserres rises on an elevated plateau that gives it a commanding position over the Llobregat valley below. This strategic location made it an important surveillance point during the Middle Ages, when watchtowers and fortified villages guarded the routes through the comarca. The old quarter preserves narrow stone streets, ancient doorways and houses clustering around the church.

The church of Sant Pau, of Romanesque origin with later modifications, is the main monument of the village. The views from the church square are extraordinary on clear days, when you can see the distinctive profiles of the Pedraforca, the Cadí range and the jagged silhouette of Montserrat all in one panoramic sweep. This viewpoint alone makes the visit worthwhile.

The landscape of lower Berguedà

Casserres exemplifies the landscape of lower Berguedà: cereal fields, pine and holm oak forests, scattered farmsteads and agricultural life that continues actively. The municipal territory extends across undulating terrain with small valleys and gentle ridges that create constantly varying topography and microclimates.

The Empedrats de Casserres route allows discovery of singular rock formations and panoramic comarcal views. These stone formations, sculpted by erosion, create a landscape of geological interest. The rural paths connecting the farmsteads are ideal for peaceful walks where you're more likely to encounter a farmer on a tractor than another hiker - a refreshing change from crowded mountain trails.

Connection within the comarca

Casserres sits midway between Berga and Gironella, well connected by the comarcal road. This position makes it a regular transit point within the comarca, with easy access to both upper Berguedà villages and those of the lower valley. The C-16 highway passes nearby, providing rapid connection to Barcelona when needed.

The weekly market and local festivals maintain active community life. The festa major of Casserres in summer includes traditional activities such as sardana dancing, correbars (traditional bar races between villages) and communal dinners. These celebrations provide visitors a window into authentic Catalan village life and community solidarity.
