Gironella: riverside town with history and textile colonies

Gironella is the second largest town in Berguedà by population, with around 5,000 residents. Situated on the banks of the Llobregat river south of Berga, it is a town with distinct character combining a medieval old quarter, an emblematic old bridge and notable industrial heritage linked to textile colonies. The strategic position on the historic road between Barcelona and the Pyrenees has shaped Gironella's development over centuries. Unlike smaller mountain villages, Gironella offers the services and animation of a proper town while maintaining connections to its historical roots and surrounding landscapes. From La Tor de Montclar, it is about 15 minutes by car.

The Old Bridge and medieval quarter

The Pont Vell de Gironella (Old Bridge of Gironella) is a medieval stone bridge crossing the Llobregat with an unmistakable profile that has become the town's symbol. Recently restored for pedestrian use, it offers magnificent panoramic views of the river and the old quarter climbing the hillside. The bridge dates from the 14th century and represents medieval engineering at its finest.

The old quarter preserves the church of Santa Eulàlia, of Romanesque origin with later expansions, and streets with stairs ascending to the upper town. Remains of the medieval castle walls and stone houses with Gothic doorways create an ensemble full of charm. The climb through the old streets rewards with views over the rooftops to the surrounding mountains and valleys.

The colonies: Viladomiu and Ametlla de Merola

Gironella and its surroundings preserve some of the most important textile colonies in Berguedà. Viladomiu Nou and Viladomiu Vell are two colonies with original factories, housing and churches remarkably intact. The Ametlla de Merola is one of the largest and best-preserved colonies in all of Catalonia, with an arcaded square, theatre and school forming an impressive ensemble that functions almost as a complete town within a town.

These colonies testify to the Catalan Industrial Revolution and the living conditions of textile workers. The paternalistic system of company control over workers' lives is evident in the architecture - everything the company provided, and everything it could thus control. Understanding this history is crucial for understanding modern Catalonia.

Commercial and cultural life

Gironella has notable commercial activity for its size. The weekly market, town centre shops and restaurants create animation in a town that serves as a service centre for surrounding municipalities. Unlike tiny villages, Gironella offers dining variety, shops for daily needs and cultural venues.

The festa major of Gironella includes correfocs, giants (traditional large figures) and rich cultural programming. The restored Theatre of Ametlla de Merola hosts performances and activities throughout the year. The town maintains strong traditions including sardana dancing and castellers (human towers), expressions of Catalan popular culture.

Riverside walks and cycling routes

The riverside promenade along the Llobregat at Gironella is an easy pleasant route following the river through riparian vegetation. From Gironella you can walk to the Viladomiu colonies or downstream toward Puig-reig, combining nature and industrial heritage in a single itinerary. The path is mostly flat and suitable for all fitness levels.

Mountain biking routes on rural tracks through the municipal territory and excursions to surrounding ridges complete the outdoor activity offerings. The terrain is varied enough to maintain interest without being excessively challenging for moderately fit cyclists or walkers.
