Olvan is a small municipality of Berguedà situated between Berga and the Llobregat valley, amid an environment of meadows, fields and forests of exceptional serenity. With just over 900 inhabitants, it is a village maintaining authentic rural life, with centuries-old farmsteads, ancient paths and an unhurried pace of life that offers respite from modern stress. The scattered settlement pattern typical of rural Berguedà means Olvan consists of a small nucleus surrounded by traditional masies (stone farmhouses) spread across the gentle landscape. From La Tor de Montclar, it is only 10 minutes by car, making Olvan one of the closest villages and an excellent destination for short walks or cycling.
A village of farmsteads and paths
Olvan is a dispersed municipality, with a small main nucleus and numerous masies scattered throughout the territory. This dispersed structure is typical of rural Berguedà and speaks of an agricultural and livestock economy that has shaped the landscape over centuries. Each farmstead, often with a name documented since the 12th or 13th century, represents generations of families working the same land.
The church of Sant Andreu, of Romanesque origin with later modifications, centres the nucleus. Stone houses, threshing floors and family vegetable gardens create a genuinely authentic rural atmosphere. Unlike villages that have become dormitory communities, Olvan retains its agricultural character - you still see tractors in the streets and smell wood smoke from chimneys.
Romanesque heritage
The municipality of Olvan preserves several examples of rural Romanesque architecture, including the hermitage of Sant Vicenç d'Obiols, a small 10th-century temple that is one of the oldest in Berguedà. These isolated churches, many in solitary locations, testify to medieval territorial colonisation and the spread of Christianity through the Pyrenean foothills.
Visiting Olvan's hermitages can be combined with walks along rural paths, creating cultural routes of great interest. The churches are typically simple structures - single naves with semicircular apses - but their purity of form and integration with landscape give them remarkable aesthetic power. The interiors preserve traces of ancient frescoes and stone altars worn smooth by centuries of use.
Hiking and nature
Olvan is an ideal starting point for peaceful walks through rural Berguedà. Paths between farmsteads follow ancient routes that connected settlements before roads existed. These tracks wind through fields, cross streams on stone bridges and pass through mixed woodland, offering constantly changing scenery and intimate scale.
The route toward Borredà crosses forests and meadows through landscapes of great beauty. The Llobregat trail descends toward the river through forest paths with views opening periodically toward the valley below. The tranquillity of Olvan's territory makes it an excellent location for birdwatching and landscape photography - you can work quietly without crowds or disturbance.
