Avià is a municipality that surrounds Berga to the south and east, forming an urban continuity with the comarcal capital. With around 2,300 inhabitants distributed between the main nucleus and various residential developments, Avià combines quiet residential life with notable Romanesque heritage and a transition landscape between plain and mountain. The proximity to Berga provides access to all services while maintaining a semi-rural character that appeals to families seeking space and tranquillity. From La Tor de Montclar, it is only 10 minutes by car, making Avià one of the closest villages to our house.
Santa Maria d'Avià: jewel of Romanesque art
The church of Santa Maria d'Avià is one of the jewels of Berguedà Romanesque architecture. Dating from the 12th century, it is notable for its sculpted portal and especially for the Romanesque frescoes that originally decorated the apse. These paintings, now in the Diocesan and Comarcal Museum of Solsona, represent scenes from the life of the Virgin and Christ with exceptional artistic quality that ranks them among the finest Romanesque murals in Catalonia.
The church, carefully restored, preserves the original Romanesque structure with three naves and a tower belfry that dominates the surrounding landscape. The exterior stonework and the proportions of the building exemplify the Romanesque aesthetic at its purest - solid, harmonious and timeless. Visits can be arranged through the local tourism office.
A municipality between Berga and the plain
Avià occupies a territory of transition between the mountains of upper Berguedà and the first plains of lower Berguedà. The landscape includes cultivated fields, pine forests and residential zones that have developed thanks to proximity to Berga. This transitional character is evident in the vegetation, architecture and way of life.
The nucleus of Avià maintains a rural character despite proximity to the comarcal capital. Traditional farmsteads (masies) scattered through the municipality, some of them centuries old, testify to the agricultural tradition of the area. Modern housing developments coexist with these historical structures, creating an interesting juxtaposition of old and new ways of living in the landscape.
Activities and services
Avià has sports facilities, green spaces and a good network of rural paths allowing walking, running and cycling amid pleasant countryside. Proximity to Berga guarantees access to all services without sacrificing the tranquillity of a semi-rural environment - an increasingly valued combination.
The festa major of Avià in August is a popular celebration with activities for all ages. Throughout the year, the municipality organises cultural activities, local product markets and guided hiking outings. The transition landscape around Avià offers gentler terrain than the high mountains, making it ideal for families with young children or those preferring easier walks.
