Castellar de n'Hug: sources of the Llobregat river and pastoral life

Castellar de n'Hug is one of the most emblematic villages of the upper Berguedà, famous as the location of the sources of the Llobregat river - the waterway that flows through the entire comarca all the way to Barcelona and the Mediterranean Sea. Situated at 1,395 metres altitude in a landscape of high Pyrenean meadows and forests, it is a village of pastoral life with a strong livestock farming tradition. The combination of spectacular natural setting, living mountain traditions and historical architecture makes Castellar de n'Hug one of the most rewarding destinations in the region. From La Tor de Montclar, it is approximately 30 minutes by car into increasingly dramatic high mountain terrain.

The sources of the Llobregat river

The fonts del Llobregat (sources of the Llobregat) mark the birthplace of one of Catalonia's most important rivers. Water gushes directly from limestone rock in a spectacular spring, forming waterfalls that mark the beginning of a 170-kilometre journey to the sea. The site is accessible by a short easy path from the village, making this one of Berguedà's essential and most accessible excursions.

The area around the sources is protected natural space, with lush riparian vegetation creating a fresh humid environment even in summer. The constant temperature of spring water (around 8-10°C year-round) means the area remains green when surrounding meadows dry out. The sound of cascading water and the cool mist create a memorable sensory experience. Interpretive signs explain the hydrogeology and the river's importance to Catalonia.

The Shepherds' Fair and pastoral traditions

Each July, Castellar de n'Hug hosts the Fira de Pastors i Artesans (Shepherds and Artisans Fair), one of the most important rural fairs in all of Catalonia. The fair brings together shepherds from across the Pyrenees with their flocks, artisans making traditional mountain products, and visitors eager to experience living pastoral culture.

Sheepdog competitions demonstrate the remarkable working relationship between shepherd and dog. Sheep shearing demonstrations showcase skills passed down through generations. Tastings of artisan cheese made in high mountain shepherds' huts offer genuine mountain flavours. Traditional music and folk dances fill the village throughout the weekend. The fair is both a celebration and a statement of continuity - proof that mountain pastoral life, though diminished, remains alive.

The village and Pyrenean architecture

The nucleus of Castellar de n'Hug is an ensemble of stone houses with slate roofs, cobbled streets and a parish church overlooking the village. The architecture is pure Pyrenean, with elements like solanes (south-facing wooden balconies designed to capture winter sun) and pallisses (covered spaces for livestock below living quarters).

The main square and streets of the old quarter maintain the atmosphere of an authentic mountain village with a tranquillity that invites unhurried wandering. Unlike more touristy mountain resorts, Castellar has preserved its working character - you sense this remains a real community, not a museum.

Mountain routes and natural surroundings

From Castellar, routes lead into true high mountain terrain. The Serra del Moixeró offers summit ascents with spectacular views over the Cerdanya valley. The Coll de la Creueta mountain pass provides a scenic drive to the Ripollès region. The Via del Nicolau descends following the young Llobregat river down to Guardiola de Berguedà.

In winter, proximity to La Molina ski resort (30 minutes) makes Castellar an attractive base for skiers preferring to stay in an authentic mountain village rather than a purpose-built resort. The high altitude means snow often blankets the village itself, transforming the landscape into a winter wonderland.
