La Tor de Montclar - Montmajor: plateau between Berguedà and Solsonès

Montmajor: plateau between Berguedà and Solsonès

Montmajor is an extensive municipality of Berguedà that extends across the transition plateau toward Solsonès. With around 500 inhabitants distributed between the main nucleus and numerous farmsteads, it is a territory of open landscape, cereal fields and forests preserving authentic rural life. The municipality's great extent means it encompasses varied terrain from the Llobregat valley to the Solsonès border, with scattered settlements reflecting centuries of agricultural colonisation. From La Tor de Montclar, it is 20 minutes by car through rolling countryside that gradually becomes more elevated and open.

An extensive and dispersed territory

Montmajor is one of the most extensive municipalities in Berguedà, with territory spanning from the Llobregat valley to the Solsonès border. The population is distributed between the nucleus of Montmajor and dozens of farmsteads scattered across an undulating plateau landscape. This dispersal testifies to an agricultural economy that colonised every corner of the territory.

The farmsteads, many with names documented since the Middle Ages, are the living heritage of the municipality. Each represents a family working the same land for generations - continuity of place and practice increasingly rare in modern Europe. The architecture of these masies, built from local stone with wooden beams and tile roofs, exemplifies vernacular building traditions adapted to climate and available materials.

Romanesque heritage

The municipality of Montmajor is especially rich in Romanesque heritage. The parish church of Sant Sadurní de Montmajor and numerous hermitages scattered through the territory form an ensemble of great interest for medieval art lovers. These buildings represent the Christianisation and colonisation of the territory during the 10th through 12th centuries.

The chapel of Santa Cecília and the hermitage of Sant Pere del Brunet are recommended stops on a route allowing discovery of Romanesque art in its original context: isolated, severe and integrated into landscape. Unlike museum pieces, these churches remain in place, allowing you to understand how they related to the medieval landscape and settlement pattern.

Landscape and activities

Montmajor offers landscape of great amplitude: fields extending to the horizon, pine and oak forests, and open skies inviting contemplation. The sense of space here is exceptional - you can see weather systems approaching from far away, watch shadows of clouds moving across distant hillsides, experience the landscape as a whole rather than fragmented views.

Rural tracks and paths between farmsteads are ideal for walking, mountain biking and horseback riding. The farmsteads route of Montmajor circular itinerary visits principal masies. The path toward Solsonès crosses the comarcal border by ancient routes. Wildlife observation is rewarding - roe deer, wild boar and raptors are regularly seen.
