La Tor de Montclar - Saldes: in the shadow of the Pedraforca, Catalonia's magic mountain

Saldes: in the shadow of the Pedraforca, Catalonia's magic mountain

Saldes is the village that guards the Pedraforca, Catalonia's most emblematic mountain. With just over 300 inhabitants, this small municipality of the upper Berguedà serves as the main starting point for ascending the distinctive twin-peaked summit that has fascinated mountaineers, artists and nature lovers for centuries. The village itself, perched at 1,225 metres altitude in a landscape of alpine meadows and pine forests, embodies authentic mountain life. The omnipresent silhouette of the Pedraforca dominates every vista, creating one of the most dramatic settings of any village in the Catalan Pyrenees. From La Tor de Montclar, Saldes is about 25 minutes by car.

The Pedraforca: the forked mountain

The Pedraforca (literally "stone fork") rises to 2,497 metres with a distinctive bifurcated profile created by two summits joined by a narrow col called the Enforcadura. Declared a Natural Site of National Interest, its iconic forked shape makes it instantly recognizable and has given it mythical status as Catalonia's symbolic mountain.

The main ascent routes depart from Saldes municipality. The Collell route is the normal way - demanding but accessible to experienced hikers with proper equipment and fitness. The Verdet route offers an alternative approach from the southern flank. The northern route from Gósol is less travelled and more remote. All routes require proper mountain experience, as the terrain includes exposed sections and can be treacherous in poor weather. The reward is standing atop one of the most spectacular viewpoints in the Pyrenees.

Gresolet: gateway to the mountain

Gresolet is a mountain area at the base of the Pedraforca that serves as the starting point for most excursions. The Gresolet leisure area offers parking, springs and picnic areas, functioning as base camp for mountaineers preparing for their ascent or families seeking gentler forest walks.

From Gresolet begins the trail to the Lluís Estasen mountain refuge, situated at the Collell (1,670 m). This strategically positioned refuge allows hikers to split the Pedraforca ascent over two days or to explore the area more thoroughly. The forest trail from Gresolet to the refuge passes through magnificent beech and fir woodland, with the mountain gradually revealing itself through gaps in the trees. Even for those not attempting the summit, this walk offers a taste of high mountain atmosphere.

The village and mountain life

Saldes is a village of narrow streets and stone houses clustered below the parish church. The atmosphere is of pure mountain: silence, clean air and constant views of the Pedraforca. The local economy combines traditional livestock farming with nature-based tourism, and you sense both worlds coexisting.

Saldes' restaurants serve authentic mountain cuisine using local products and seasonal ingredients. Mushrooms in autumn and grilled meats year-round are specialities particularly appreciated after a day on the mountain. The wood-oven bread baked in the village using traditional methods is excellent. Several rural guesthouses provide accommodation for visitors wanting to experience multiple days amid these high mountains.
